MPD Makes Arrest in Gilmer Ct. Murder Investigation
The Montgomery Police Department has made an arrest in the Thursday, August 18, shooting death of 30-year-old John Whitehurst of Montgomery.
MPD detectives charged Vashard Belton, 20, of Montgomery with one count of murder.
Belton was taken into custody in the 2100 block of East South Boulevard by MPD detectives on August 18. Following his arrest, he was transported to the Montgomery County Detention Facility, where he was being held under a $250,000 bond.
MPD and Fire Medics responded to the 3500 block of Gilmer Court at about 10:45 p.m. August 18 after receiving a report of a subject shot. There, they located Whitehurst, who had sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
MPD’s initial investigation indicates the shooting stemmed from a verbal altercation.
