Jobs, Youth Top Voter Concerns Ahead Of Tallassee Mayoral Election

With Tuesday’s election, the city of Tallassee is looking for change. There are several issues on everyone’s mind, not the least of which are jobs.

There are four candidates vying for the mayor’s office in Tallassee, Jeanna Kervin, Trey Taylor, Johnny Hammock, and former mayor George McCain.

No matter who wins, many people want to see more jobs in town so people aren’t commuting to places like Auburn and Montgomery.

The mill, one of the major employers in town, shut down in 2005 and burned to the ground earlier this year.

“We need more jobs to keep people in town because we’ve kind of run out. The mill got shutdown. So we really need more jobs to attract people here in town,” said Linda Mitchell.

But it’s not just jobs, some people like Michael Petty and his family are looking to the next generation.

He wants to see some improvements made to the school system.

“The schools, they need to take care of them. Go back to a lot of the older stuff, but that’s government. I mean, little guy will be going to school in a few years, so they need to work on that. Maybe expand the school system,” said Petty.

Others want to see more changes that help out the youth in town when school is not in session.

Some say the entertainment options in town don’t do a lot to keep kids off the streets.

“We have them going everywhere else and getting in trouble outside of town. And on these roads at night if we had something like a bowling alley here, it would get the youth off the street. It would bring families together,” said Margaret Byers.

It’s not just the election of a new mayor on the ballot, Tallassee will also be voting on Sunday alcohol sales.
