Selma voters trim a crowded field of five mayoral candidates — down to two.

State Representative Rev. Darrio Melton — and former Selma mayor Rev. James Perkins, Jr. — will face-off in a runoff election.

The unofficial results have Melton with 35% of the vote and Perkins with 30%.

Incumbent mayor George Evans got 18% of the vote.

Meanwhile, its back to the campaign trail for Melton and Perkins.

“I think it maybe gets more exciting because then you get refinement of the issues,” said Selma voter Jana Garner.

“We get refinement of the candidates and we really can get out there and educate even more voters as to the platforms and participation gets higher.”

“So, sometimes with the runoffs, it’s like the playoffs. It gets a little bit more exciting.”

The runoff election is October 4th.
