Biscuits sweep BayBears in doubleheader
MOBILE, Ala. (biscuitsbaseball.com) – The Biscuits swept their doubleheader with the Mobile BayBears on Monday night, winning game one 7-0 and game two 8-3 (8) at Hank Aaron Stadium to leapfrog the Jackson Generals into first place in the second half North Division.
The Biscuits sent Chase Whitley (2-0) to the mound in game one and the right-hander looked a man amongst boys tossing six shutout innings and allowing just two hits in the 7-0 victory. Willy Adames led the way with two RBIs as a three-run third put the game out of reach for the BayBears, with a two-run home run by Jake DePew, the catcher’s eighth of the season, the cherry on top in the sixth in a blowout victory.
In game two, Taylor Guerrieri threw five innings allowing just two runs on three hits in a no decision. Montgomery would score three times in the fourth thank to a Taylor Clarke wild pitch, and RBI-singles from Granden Goetzman and Justin O’Conner.
After Jamie Westbrook and Kevin Cron went back-to-back off Guerrieri in the same inning, Westbrook clobbered the first pitch he saw from Kyle Winkler over the left field wall in the sixth for his second homer of the game to even things up at three.
The game went into extra innings, where Matt Stites, (5-2) a reliever who had allowed just three earned runs in almost 40 innings all season, would load the bases before Patrick Leonard came through with a clutch RBI-single into right field to give the Biscuits a 4-3 lead. Justin Williams then followed suit with a two-out two-run single up the middle, and Goetzman took Luis Ramirez deep with a two-run shot to cap off a five-run eighth in the extra inning victory.
The Biscuits have now won eight of their last nine games and find themselves in first place with seven games to play. The Biscuits will try to win the series on Tuesday when Chih-Wei Hu (6-8) takes on Terry Doyle (NR) at 6:35 PM.
