Hornets prep for first-ever Conference USA foe in Texas-San Antonio Saturday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (bamastatesports.com) – The Alabama State football team had a late practice Sunday night in preparation for a scheduled off day on Monday, but that did not mean it was an off day from football as Head Coach Brian Jenkins took part in the SWAC’s first teleconference session between the league’s head coaches and the local and national media.

ASU’s Jenkins was the second coach to take his turn with the media and spent several minutes discussing his team’s strong showing during preseason camp.

“We had what I would consider a successful fall camp,” Jenkins said. “We came out of it with no injuries and played a lot of football. The guys came into camp in extremely good shape. This team came in focused and ready to go and it was good to get into camp. I was really proud of the guys and how focused they have been. They did a tremendous job in the classroom last year and that carried over right into camp.”

This weekend’s matchup at Texas-San Antonio is the first meeting between the two schools and it is the first time an ASU team has played against a team from Conference USA.

“They have a new coach in Frank Wilson who is a first-class guy,” Jenkins said. “UTSA hit a home run when they hired Frank so it is going to be a tough football game. It is a little bit unknown what they are going to do against us with their schemes. We are looking forward to the game. It is an important game for us and a big challenge for us right out of the gate. We will be ready and prepared for it.”

The Hornets will get back to game preparation for UTSA when they hit the practice field Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
