Elmore Co. Crash Leaves One Injured, One Dead

A single-vehicle crash claimed the life of a McCalla woman.

Melissa New, 28, was killed when the 2014 Ford Fusion in which she was a passenger left the roadway, struck a tree and caught fire. The driver, Wesley Phelps, 28, also of McCalla, was injured and transported by helicopter to UAB Hospital. Seat belts were not in use.

The crash occurred at 4:19 a.m. August 31 on Alabama 14 six miles west of Tallassee.

Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.
