Teachers in Montgomery Public Schools Waiting to Be Paid

It’s payday for Montgomery Public Schools, but so far, thousands of employees have not been paid.

Earlier this morning, Alabama News Network was contacted by a teacher saying that her paycheck had not yet gone through by direct deposit. We soon found out it wasn’t just her, but all school employees.

We contacted Montgomery Public Schools spokesperson Tom Salter. He’s blaming the non-payment on a system glitch with the school’s direct deposit. But he said could not elaborate on what the glitch is, but says that it’s being worked on.

The delay in payment is affecting nearly all school system employees. That’s roughly 4,500 people, according to Salter.

Salter also added that employees are paid once per month through direct deposit. He did say he wants to reassure employees that it is not an issue with funding — that the system has the money to cover payroll.

But we have heard from various teachers who have contacted Alabama news Network. They say an increasing number of teachers plan on going to school board headquarters after classes let out today to demand answers as to why they haven’t been paid.

Stay with Alabama News Network for updates.
