Tuskegee’s Osband Thompson grabs SIAC defensive player of the week honors
ATLANTA (goldentigersports.com) — The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) released their weekly award winners Monday afternoon, and the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers’ junior linebacker Osband Thompson was named the recipient of the Defensive Player of the Week award.
Thompson led the Golden Tigers with 16 tackles in a 36-13 victory over Clark Atlanta to open the season on the road Saturday. The junior, a preseason All-SIAC selection, had eight solo tackles and assisted on eight others in the win. He also recorded three tackles for loss (totaling 34 yards) and forced a fumble in the end zone on special teams that resulted in a safety for the Golden Tigers.
After week one, the junior has the third highest number of tackles in the nation trailing only Jordan Herdman of Simon Fraser (20) and Tyke Kozeal of Nebraska-Kearney (17).
Tuskegee (17th AFCA/19th D2football) returns to action Saturday on the road in the Whitewater Classic. The Golden Tigers will face Albany State at Garrett-Harrison Stadium in Phenix City (Ala.), with kick set for 5 pm (est).
