Hornets look for first win of season Saturday at Southern

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (bamastatesports.com) – Alabama State will hit the road for the third consecutive week this Saturday when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to face Southern University.

With two days left before the Hornets board the bus, Head Coach Brian Jenkins took some time to meet with the local media where he took a short look back at last weekend’s loss at Alcorn State and this weekend’s game at Southern.

“Last week was a good football game, a hard fought football game, we played Alcorn and took it to the wire.  We just made some mistakes that cost us to come away with a loss,” Jenkins said.  “When you play a good team like Alcorn you have to make sure you’re operating on a high level every time and in every way.  We didn’t do that and they (Alcorn) prevailed and that’s what championship teams do.”

Like ASU, the Jags of Southern will enter Saturday’s action looking for their first win, but with the talent on the Southern side of the field, Jenkins knows the Hornets will have to be at their best to come away with a win.

“We think Southern is a championship football team and we are preparing as such,” Jenkins said.  “They are an explosive football team offensively.  Everyone knows about Mr. Excitement over there (Willie Quinn).  He does thing whether he does have the ball or he doesn’t have the ball.  He’s a good football player.  He’s an explosive football player.  He really puts that team on his back and does some really good things.”

After going back and reviewing film the one thing that jumped out to Jenkins was the missed assignments and it is an area the team will be working on to shore up in preparing for Southern.

“We have to reduce the ma’s (missed assignments),” Jenkins said.  “We had several ma’s against Alcorn.  It’s encouraging, but it’s discouraging.  If we can decrease our ma’s, the sky is the limit on what kind of offensive football team we can be.  We went toe-to-toe and down to the wire with one of the best teams in the league and we had several ma’s.  We had to show our guys if we can clean up these ma’s we can finish these drives with some points and we can be more effective in some areas.”

The kickoff in Baton Rouge is set for 6 p.m. and all the live action can be heard on the Hornet Radio Network at bamastatesports.com.
