Warhawk bootsmen lose home opener to Clayton State 3-1
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (aumathletics.com) — The Auburn Montgomery men’s soccer team fell to Clayton State University 3-1 Wednesday night in the home opener for the program.
NOTES
• AUM fell to 2-3, while Clayton State improved to 1-4.
• The match was the 2016 home opener for the Warhawks, and was the first night game played at the AUM Soccer Complex.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Sophomore William York picked up his first goal of the 2016 season, and finished the night with three shots.
• Freshman Alexis Arriaga and senior Alan Harwell each added three shots on goal as well. Arriaga finished the game with two shots on goal, and Harwell tallied one.
• Sophomores Nick Davis and Alexandro Costa each added a shot on goal for the Warhawks.
• Iain Smith led the way for the Lakers with two goals on four shots, and added an assist. Waynee Hyman added the final goal for Clayton State.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Clayton State struck first in the 13th minute on a cross from the right side of the box that found the foot of an open Smith for an early 1-0 lead.
• AUM responded in the 24th minute as a loose ball found the foot of York from 10 yards outside the 18 to level the score at 1-1.
• Clayton State added its second goal of the match on a cross from the left side of the box off the foot of Smith that found Hyman to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead in the 35th minute.
• Clayton State tallied its final goal of the match in the 37th minute of the first half. A shot from Elakabawy bounced off the crossbar to a waiting Smith for his second goal of the match, which gave the Lakers a 3-1 advantage.
• Fraire picked up five saves in the second half to hold the Warhawks to just one goal during the match, as neither team was able to score in the second 45 minutes to give Clayton State the 3-1 decision.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Both teams finished the match with 15 shots, but AUM put seven on frame, as Clayton State added seven shots on goal.
• AUM led Clayton State in corner kicks 10-4.
• Clayton State picked up seven saves in the match, while AUM added four.

• The Warhawks will return to action on Friday, Sept. 16, when they travel to Cleveland, Tenn. to face Lee University at 6 p.m.
