Ala. Charter Commission Interviews Charter School Applicants
Alabama Moves a step closer to setting up charter schools around the state.
The Alabama Charter Commission interviewed applicants hoping to start charter schools in their areas Tuesday. 2 of those applicants were from Huntsville and one was from Mobile. Applicants representing the Mobile Area Foundation was approved, while Edge Academy from Huntsville was denied. Sports, Leadership, and Management also from Huntsville was conditionally approved based on a ruling from the judge about a desegregation order.
“What we really want to do is use the charter opportunity as a way to take it to the next scale, to serve the more than 2 -thousand young people down on the Gulf Coast of Mobile who really need this option,” says Jeremiah Newell of the Mobile Area Education Foundation.
Sports, Leadership and Management of Huntsville can still be eligible to open a charter school if they receive a favorable ruling from the judge.
