Montgomery County Officials Cracking Down on Truancy
Truancy is an issue schools across the country deal with on a daily basis. It’s one of many reasons why the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office is finding ways to keep students in school. Statistics we found says some metropolitan areas in the United States report thousands of unexcused absences each day.
District Attorney Daryl Bailey says truancy is a big issue, and research shows that students who attend school, and receive their high school diploma are better positioned to be more successful in life. A decrease in truancy also means a decline in teen crimes. The DA’s office says some criminals in the justice are as young as 13 years old. Bailey says his office is doing whatever it takes to prevent that from happening.
“We want to make sure that we get to the root of the problem, what caused them to be suspended, and help try to get those kids back into school,” says Bailey.
Parents are also held accountable if their children miss a certain amount of days in school, facing possible fines from the school system.
