UPDATE: Special Counsel Wants to Subpoena Documents from Bentley

The special counsel in the impeachment investigation against Gov. Robert Bentley is asking a House committee to subpoena documents from the governor and others after getting few voluntarily turned over.

Special counsel Jack Sharman told the House Judiciary Committee Tuesday that he had requested documents from Bentley and others but had “few or no documents” voluntarily produced.

Sharman asked for subpoenas for the governor’s office, Bentley, Bentley’s campaign, the governor’s former political adviser Rebecca Caldwell Mason and other entities. The committee is investigating if there are grounds to impeach Bentley after he admitted inappropriate behavior with Mason.

However, committee members questioned if they had any enforcement mechanism for the subpoenas.

Bentley’s legal adviser David Byrne told the committee that the office today delivered more than 1,000 pages of documents.
