Jenkins holds out hope in Hornets’ 0-4 start
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (bamastatesports.com) – “Disappointing” was the word Alabama State Head Coach used in describing last week’s loss to Texas Southern as he met with the Montgomery media at Wednesday’s weekly press conference.
“Last week was disappointing because I thought we played well enough to win, but we didn’t finish well,” Jenkins said. “We made some mistakes down the stretch that cost us. But nevertheless, I am proud of this football team because they came out and gave a great, grand and valiant effort and so therefore things happen and they just didn’t happen in our favor.”
Things will not get any easier for the Hornets this weekend when a vastly improved Arkansas-Pine Bluff team invades ASU Stadium. The Golden Tigers defeated the two-time reigning SWAC Champions Alcorn State and have the conference’s top passer in freshman Brandon Duncan.
Through four games Duncan has completed 100 of his 163 passes for 1,109 yards and six touchdowns. He averages 273.5 yards passing per game. He leads the conference in completions, attempts and yards per game.
Duncan has also added 108 yards rushing and his 284.2 total offense per game is second in the conference.
“Their quarterback is really good and they do some good things offensively,” Jenkins said. “They throw the ball a lot and their quarterback gets rid of the ball fast and gets it to his playmakers. They spread you out and throw it all over the field and then they will hit you with the run with some good running backs, but it all starts with their quarterback.”
Despite the 0-4 start, Jenkins remains upbeat and believes in this team and knows they still have plenty of time to have a strong season.
Jenkins added, “There’s a lot of football left and that’s what I told my team. There is a lot of football left and we have an opportunity to play that football. If we play that football the right way and in a complete ball game we will give ourselves a chance of having a successful season.”
