Radio host’s Facebook post upsets Andalusia residents

An Andalusia radio host is facing some heat after a Facebook post upset some residents. Blaine Wilson, the man behind the post, is the owner of and a broadcaster on WAAO, a radio station in Andalusia. Wilson, an open supporter of Donald Trump, made a Facebook post defending Trump’s words in the leaked video from 2005.

Wilson’s post reads, “Most of you complaining about Trump would love for him to talk to you promiscuously. You don’t have to admit it. You are settling for some nobody talking this way to you now. You’d love for The Donald to just look your way.”

While the comment was made on Wilson’s personal Facebook page, those against the post say his words were offensive to women and a public figure needs to use more caution when posting on social media.

“For a person that is connected to women, and connected to his community, to say something so disgusting towards women is disappointing,” said Brittany McLaney. McLaney is speaking for a group of women who messaged her about the post, sharing their personal stories of sexual assault and saying they were also upset with Wilson’s words.

“And you know, I don’t have a problem with somebody posting their political beliefs or their personal beliefs on Facebook, if it doesn’t violate a person’s rights. Which is the problem I have with the post, is that it violates women’s rights,” she added.

Wilson however, argues his post is nothing more than his opinion and free speech.

“That’s why America is great, because we all have the right to our opinion,” he said. “This post that I made, that I stand by, was on my personal page and I’m entitled to that. I can have my opinion on my page. It didn’t violate any standards or policies or Facebook and social media. It didn’t break any laws, there’s no crime committed.”

McLaney says that’s not good enough, however.

“They’re not just words. They’re powerful,” she said. “And choosing to use those particular words in a public forum on Facebook, you know I don’t feel sorry for him. I think that he owes us an apology. I feel he owes women an apology.”

Wilson said he had nothing for which he should apologize.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission states that sexual harassment “does not have to be of a sexual nature… and can include offensive remarks about a person’s sex.” The EEOC also says, “it is illegal to harass a woman by making offensive comments about women in general.”
