Lewis sisters pace Lady Hornet booters to 6-2 win over Southern
BATON ROUGE, La. (bamastatesports.com) – It was another rousing start as sisters Ariela Lewis and Aaliyah Lewis teamed up to score three goals in the opening 21 minutes of play and Inma Martinez backed that up with a career-high five points as the Alabama State women’s soccer team dispatched Southern 6-2 for a conference win on the road Friday night at Jaguar Park.
The Lady Hornets (5-9 overall, 4-2 SWAC) benefited from a goal off the foot of Ar. Lewis in the seventh minute and followed with a pair of goals from Aa. Lewis in the ninth minute and 21st minute to grab a quick 3-0 lead.
Martinez accounted for assists on two of those goals and finished with one goal and three assists in her career-best night.
“She [Martinez] was definitely involved in a lot of the plays tonight,” said ASU head coach Jodie Smith.
“She got her goal on a set piece from about 25 yards out to beat the keeper and the wall. I thought it was one of her more complete games of the season and she was really distributing the ball. One of the midfielder’s most important jobs is finding our forwards in space and she did that.”
Southern (1-11 overall, 1-5 SWAC) cut the deficit to 3-1 on a goal by Chloe Sims in the 24th minute, but ASU added three more goals after halftime as Martinez scored on a penalty kick and Larissa White and Emily Fleming each added a score to get the Lady Hornets some further separation.
The Lady Jaguars made it as close as 4-2 on a goal from Khadijah Ahmad in the 66th minute.
White scored from inside the box on a feed from Martinez in the 77th to make it 5-2 and Fleming put an exclamation point on the night with her second goal of the season in the 89th.
ASU plays at Jackson State on Sunday at 1 p.m. in an interesting SWAC match up after the Tigers won their game on Friday by defeating Alabama A&M.
