Hank Williams Statue Has New Home in Montgomery
A landmark in downtown Montgomery honoring one of the city’s most famous residents now has a new home.
The Hank Williams statue has been in the park across from city hall for 25 years. However, Monday morning crews removed the statue from it’s perch in the park and moved it to the median in front of the RiverFront on Tallapoosa and Commerce streets.
Steve Jones with the city of Montgomery said with a changing Montgomery, the statue wasn’t in the right location anymore.
“We don’t think it got the traffic, it got the attention, it got the notoriety that it deserved for one of our most famous Montgomerians, and we said what a great opportunity to take Hank Williams, stick him on Tallapoosa and Commerce as kind of the focal point of downtown Montgomery.”
The statue was originally commissioned by Williams son, Hank Williams, Jr. in 1991.
