AUM’s Bassow named recipient of Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (aumathletics.com) —– AUM sophomore women’s cross country student-athlete Leah Bassow was announced as the second recipient of the Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award for the 2016-17 academic year.
This award is presented to a student-athlete certified for eligibility and involved in a varsity sport that contributes to the team’s success through their individual leadership skills, their commitment to teamwork, their extra effort during practice and their demonstration of sportsmanship. Additional contributing factors include academic success, character and exemplary community outreach, as well as athletics performance during the previous two weeks.
“Leah was originally recruited for the AUM women’s soccer team and after she left the soccer program, I picked her up at the advice of the other members of the women’s team,” head coach Ryan Thompson said of Bassow. “She leads by example and works extremely hard in practice and in competition.
Recently at the Montevallo Classic, Bassow ran a 23:21:00 6k time which set the school record and was good for a 21st overall finish in a highly competitive NCAA Division II field. Additionally, at the Gulf Coast Stampede, she ran the 5k in 19:49:00 which was good for 5th all-time in school history (only behind HollyAnn Goble’s top-four times) and a third overall finish.
Off the course, Bassow is heavily involved with the International Student Association which promotes the international population at AUM not only around campus, but around Montgomery as well. Bassow carries a 3.7 grade point average and is a school of business ambassador where she helps promote the school of business at various events around campus.
Other nominees included men’s cross country student-athlete Jacob Russell Lister and Caroline Booth of the women’s soccer team.
