New Food Mart Brings Fresh Produce To Downtown Montgomery

slc food martMore and more lofts are coming to downtown Montgomery, which means more people in the area after the close of business.

The new SLT Food Mart wants to cater not only to those who work downtown, but also to those at hotels and apartments.

Store co-owner George Trawick says this has been in the works for the last year.

“As you know people are health conscious these days. Not only do we have fresh fruits but sugar free items. Also we have lactate free. Whatever the people want we’re going to put it in this store,” said Trawick.

It’s not just a convenience store. The new market has milk, bananas, even steaks.

There’s been calls for a downtown grocery store ever since the city started to redevelop Dexter Avenue.

“I think it is a really good beginning and it certainly surpasses what we’ve had. We’ve actually got two places, a nick and nackers there, city drugs, they’ve got some food stuff. But this is truly a grocery store slash market and you can get staples here plus you can get some other items,” said Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange.

Strange says there will continue to be more opportunities as we move forward.

Some cities like Birmingham have new Publix stores in the downtown areas, and the mayor says that’s still on the table for Montgomery.

“I think over the next few years we will see one of the national brands try and put one of their urban models in place. In fact I had the opportunity to meet with Publix in the last couple of weeks and mention Montgomery Alabama,” said Mayor Strange.
