Lady Hornets’ 13-0 SWAC mark welcomes Prairie View volleyball

ITTA BENA, Miss. (bamastatesports.com) – The Alabama State women’s volleyball team kept it rolling on Saturday with a straight sets sweep on the road at Mississippi Valley State with a 3-0 victory (25-15, 25-12, 25-11) to improve to 13-0 against Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponents.

Ni’yesha Brown, a junior transfer from Fresno City College, stayed hot with her ninth game this season with double digit kills as the six-footer outside hitter put down a game-high 12 kills against only two errors to go along with three aces.

Alabama State (16-8 overall, 13-0 SWAC) hit an impressive .430 as a team.

The Lady Hornets also received solid games from Bayle Bennett (nine kills, seven digs, two blocks), Kori Kutsch (team-high 19 assists) and Jamie Coleman (team-best nine digs and four assists).

ASU improved to 35-2 in conference matches since the 2013 season and will next host Prairie View A&M on Friday at 7 p.m. from Lockhart Gymnasium for Military Appreciation Night.

“She’s done a great job,” said ASU head volleyball coach Penny Lucas-White of Brown’s play.

“She’s ready for the ball. She brings the energy we need. Right now, she’s our terminator.  When we are passing well, we know that we can give it to her.  Our captains, Jamie [Coleman] and Candace [Martin] have done a phenomenal job in keeping our team focused and we talked about being consistent.  We’re not measuring ourselves against the competition. We measure ourselves from our practice to the games.”
