Hornets surge past Huntingdon, 89-61 in exhibition play

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (bamastatesports.com) – Rodney Simeon got his first action of the season and scored a game-high 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting with four steals and the Alabama State men’s basketball team played some stubborn defense as the Hornets earned an 89-61 exhibition victory over Huntingdon at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Monday evening.

Alabama State held the Hawks to just 31 percent shooting from the floor and caused 25 turnovers on their way to a big second half in which ASU outscored Huntingdon 49-25 after halftime.

ASU did a solid job of sharing the basketball as the team combined for 20 assists including a team-high seven assists from Torloft Thomas.

Tony Armstrong pulled down 14 rebounds while Amir Warnock and Reginald Gee scored 10 points apiece.

The Hornets led nearly wire-to-wire and scored 50 of their points in the paint.

“Good win,” said ASU head men’s basketball coach Lewis Jackson.

“I thought in that first half that we really didn’t do a good job in our defense.  We were trying to pick up full court from the beginning of the game and get into our press defense.  And, they got open shots.  Our rotations were bad.  In the second half, I thought we played some solid man-to-man defense.  We held them for the first five to five and a half minutes without scoring and were able to push the lead up.  The guys gave a great effort in the second half.”

Coach Jackson said that he thought that team did a better job of getting out and running the fast break.

“We wanted to get out and run,” Jackson said.

Tonight, we got 20 fast break points.  In our last outing, we only had six or eight.  I thought the guys really pushed the ball on the floor.  We had 20 assists.  They looked for each other.”
