ASU secures 4th straight 20 win season in 3-0 victory of Southern
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (bamastatesports.com) – The Alabama State women’s volleyball team has been a model of consistency over these past years under head coach Penny Lucas-White.
On Monday night, the Lady Hornets made it four consecutive seasons with at least 20 wins with a straight sets triumph versus Southern by the scores of 25-23, 25-17, 25-21.
Alabama State (20-8 overall, 17-0 SWAC) had to rally in the opening set.
Trailing 17-8, ASU turned to its opposing front line of Briana Dorsey, Ni’yesha Brown, Bayle Bennett and Krysta Medearis to stoke their fire and take back the set 25-23.
Set two was tight as both teams traded points to a 15-15 tie before ASU won eight of nine points down the stretch behind their front line to win the second set 25-17.
In the third set, ASU went up 9-4 before Southern battled back to lock the score at 15 again.
Alabama State got three kills from Dorsey and other big kills from Medearis and Candace Martin to seal it 25-21.
Dorsey, the conference’s most efficient player, sprung around and totaled a game-high 13 kills against just two errors, Brown and Bennett both had 10 kills apiece and Medearis added eight in a typical spread attack that has led to their success this season.
Setters Justus Tuiolosega led with 20 assists and Kori Kutsch provided 16 assists and Jamie Coleman had 11 digs as she is now just 10 digs shy of reaching 1,000 digs for her career.
Since 1994, Coleman ranks second in program history in total digs behind just Luiza Griz (1,194 digs), who played from 2011-2013.
Next, ASU closes out the regular season with Senior Night on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Alcorn State from Lockhart Gymnasium.
