Lady Hornets breeze past Grambling en route to SWAC semifinals
JACKSON, Miss. (bamastatesports.com) – It was smooth sailing for the Alabama State women’s volleyball team as the Lady Hornets kept chugging along with yet another straight sets victory against No. 8 seed Grambling State by the scores of 25-12, 25-12, 25-13 Friday morning at T.B. Ellis Gymnasium in a SWAC Tournament Quarterfinal.
Next, top-seeded Alabama State (22-8 overall) takes on No. 4 Alabama A&M in a SWAC Tournament semifinal on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Lady Bulldogs eliminated Prairie View A&M in four sets in the second match of the day.
The Lady Hornets have been on a blistering pace, now winning 21 of their last 22 matches, and 10th consecutive match.
Alabama State has been fiercely dominant against the SWAC, winning 57 of 60 sets, and improved to 19-0 versus conference opponents this season.
Alabama A&M (13-21 overall) is one of three SWAC teams to have won a set from ASU this season.
Jackson State and Texas Southern are the only others to do so.
Alabama State hit .543 as a team, committing a miniscule six total team errors throughout the match.
Briana Dorsey and Ni’yesha Brown had 11 kills apiece and Bayle Bennett added 10 kills and Candace Martin provided eight more as ASU won in little over an hour.
Jamie Coleman had a team-high 15 digs while setters Justus Tuiolosega and Kori Kutsch combined for 27 assists.
