Steve Harvey Hosts Radio Show from ASU Campus
There were plenty of laughs to be had as Steve Harvey cracked jokes for the audience.
While he wants to bring fun to Alabama State’s Turkey Day Classic, he also says he’s in it for another reason.
“One of my goals here is to help increase enrollment and it brings more money into the state, more money into the city, more money into the university. And that’s what it’s about. And if we get this game up to capacity and get the right sponsors behind it, these universities can make a million dollars a piece easily, if not more, if it’s done the right way,” said Harvey.
And the university is proud to have him as well.
“How phenomenal is it to have someone as such an international star like Steve Harvey partner with you to help progress the future of your university? And I’m just thankful and grateful to him and his team,” said Angela McKenzie, ASU Trustee.
Harvey says one of the reasons he wanted to come to ASU and promote it was because of now-suspended President Gwendolyn Boyd. He took some time to speak out in support for her.
“I just think the work that this woman has done and her vision for the university has been right,” said Harvey.
But even without the president, there has been a lot of hype around the Turkey Day Classic that has come back to the original Thanksgiving Day.
Everyone we talked to says they are glad to welcome it back.
“Yeah, they didn’t have it last year and it was like horrible. We didn’t have anything to do. So having it here, on Thanksgiving, makes a lot of people want to come and leave the house and fellowship and see people you haven’t seen in years,” said Miles College graduate Nikki Means.
“The past three years, it hasn’t been on Thanksgiving. But this year, I get a chance to play my final game on Turkey Day, which has always been a tradition, so it’s really good. It’s a blessing,” said ASU Quarterback Quinterris Toppings.
Kick off for the game will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, November 24.
