ASU Board Fires President Gwendolyn Boyd

Trustees at Alabama State University have voted terminate President Gwendolyn Boyd in an 8 to 6 vote.
The vote came following a hearing Friday evening that lasted several hours. During the hearing, Boyd was given the opportunity to lay out her case as why she should remain at the university.
Boyd was suspended last month following a ‘lack of confidence’ vote by the board. Board members complained that they couldn’t get information from Boyd. They mentioned a laundry list of issues on campus including prisoners being allowed to clean dorm rooms.
Chairman Ralph Ruggs says he has lost confidence in Boyd’s ability to lead.
Trustees hired Boyd as Alabama State’s first female president three years ago. She received a $300,000-a-year contract, and board members gave her a three-year extension last year.
Boyd tells Alabama News Network her mind is on the students.
“I feel for the university. I really, really do. As we were trying to grow out of the revolving door and all the issues that continue to surround it, I thought we were moving in that direction. But I really feel for the students. I feel they deserve a greater chance,” said Boyd.
She says she plans to return back home to Maryland.
