Rainy Tuesday Ahead
Rain will overspread the state through the morning hours and rain should be fairly widespread by midday. We are going to see periods of rain today and it should continue through the afternoon and evening hours. A nice soaking rain for many of us, with rainfall totals around one inch possible. Good news is there is no threat of severe weather, but there could be some rumbles of thunder at times. With the clouds and rain, the day will be cooler with highs back near 70°. .
DRY AND VERY MILD: Wednesday morning we could still be dealing with a few lingering showers, but those end early in the day, and the sky will gradually clear. Wednesday through Friday, we will be in between systems. Wednesday highs will be in the lower 70s with a mix of sun and clouds. Thursday will be very similar, but highs climb into upper 70s. On Friday, a trough will cause a low pressure system to track towards the Great Lakes and we are going to see a cold front head towards Alabama. Ahead of the front, temperatures are expected to be in the upper 70s and lower 80s, but moisture return remains questionable. We will add showers and storms in the forecast late Friday and Friday night, but severe weather not expected with the main dynamics well to the north. The front should push through the state overnight and bring a new air mass into the state for the weekend.
A GASH IN THE SUN’S ATMOSPHERE: An unusually wide and sinuous hole has opened in the sun’s atmosphere, and it is stretching like a gash across the sun’s southern hemisphere. A roughly fan-shaped stream of solar wind flowing from the hole is gently buffeting Earth’s magnetic field, and it could keep polar magnetic fields in an unsettled state for the rest of February. Long range forecasts suggest the month could end with a moderately strong (G2-class) geomagnetic storm. This is all good news for Arctic sky watchers, who can expect regular episodes of Northern Lights in the nights ahead.
WEEKEND WEATHER: Behind the cold front, expect dry and cooler weather. Both Saturday and Sunday, very nice weather is expected and the sky will be mostly sunny. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 60s for most places. Sunday morning will be pretty chilly with a low in the 30s; colder pockets could see a late season freeze.
Enjoy the rain and have a terrific Tuesday!
Ryan
