Gee’s Bend Ferry to Get Million Dollar Upgrade
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
The Gee’s Bend Ferry is getting a million dollar upgrade that will make it the only ferry of its kind in the entire country.
A million dollar grant by the EPA will transform the ferry from a diesel powered vessel to a zero emissions battery-electric powered vessel.
The announcement came at an event celebrating the 10th anniversary of the ferry.
The ferry takes people and cars across the Alabama River between Camden and Gee’s Bend.
“The innovation that we’re bringing to the ferry that will provide it’s power source for the future is only the second of its kind to be implemented on a passenger ferry in the world,” said ALDOT spokesman Tony Harris.
Harris said the conversion of the ferry is expected to take about a year to complete and an interim ferry will be brought in to service the area until its finished.
