Old Cahaba Preps for Bicentennial Celebration
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
Old Cahaba in Dallas County was Alabama’s first state capital and officials at the site are planning to celebrate the state’s bicentennial with a big archaeological discovery.
The site of the the state’s first capital is now Old Cahaba Archeological Park.
Site director Linda Derry says archeologists there have found indications of the state’s first state house using ground penetrating radar from the University of Alabama.
“And sure enough we think we’ve found a little piece of the wall,” said Derry.
“This upcoming summer we’re going to work with the expedition program from the university museum and we’re going to be here three weeks and we’re going to open up more of that and see if what we have really is Alabama’s first state house.”
Old Cahaba is located 14 miles southwest of Selma.
