Montgomery Zoo Wants the Public to Help Name New Pygmy Hippo Calf
MONTGOMERY ZOO (Montgomery, AL): The Montgomery Zoo and Mann Wildlife Learning Museum invites the public to help name the new male pygmy hippopotamus calf, born January 31, in an election to be held Tuesday, May 8, 2018. The winning name will be announced on Wednesday, May 9.
The Zoo collected name suggestions from the public via Facebook, its zookeepers and other city staff in March. More than 300 comments were made on Facebook, with the top pick being Blue. The name submitted by Zookeepers was Levi, and Al was suggested by other city staff.
In the spirit of the election year, each name candidate will be represented by a fictional political party. More information about the significance of the names, their “platform” and the pygmy hippos can be found at montgomeryzoo.com.
Voting will take place on Tuesday, May 8, from 8:00 am to 5:00 p.m. online at montgomeryzoo.com, via the Zoo’s Facebook page (facebook.com/montgomeryzooandmannmuseum) or in person at the Montgomery Zoo Gift Shop. Campaign “ads” will run throughout April on social media.
Mom, Lola, and the calf are on display daily the South American realm near Monkey Island and the flamingos.
