Lee County District Attorney Indicted on Ethics, Theft and Perjury Charges

Lee County District Attorney Brandon Hughes has found himself on the other side of the law. He’s been indicted on multiple charges including conspiracy to commit theft, perjury, and ethics violations.

According to The Alabama Attorney General’s Office, Hughes used his office for personal gain by using public funds to pay for a private attorney for he and his wife. He was also charged with the illegal hiring of his three children to work for the Lee County District Attorney’s Office.

Hughes is charged with violating the state ethics act, conspiracy to commit first-degree theft and first-degree perjury. The District Attorney was allegedly part of  a scheme to steal a pickup truck from a business in Chambers County, using a Lee County search warrant to force the business to surrender the truck to authorities. The Attorney General’s Office also says Hughes provided false testimony under oath to the special grand jury.

The 5 ethics violations carry a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to 30-thousand dollars.
He could face up to 10 years in prison and a 15-thousand dollar fine for the theft and perjury charges.
