Mother of victim in fatal Selma nightclub shooting seeks justice
From the West Alabama Newsroomโ
A man accused in a deadly 2017 nightclub shooting is on trial for murder in Selma.
Shykereya Leggett was only 20 years old when she was violently taken away from her family โ and her one year old son. The young mother was shot and killed as she was trying to leave Prime Ultra Lounge back in October of 2017.
Lakeisha Leggett is Shykereyaโs mother. โIt hurts,โ said Leggett. โI cry every day.โ
โNo mom should have to bury their child. Our children arenโt burying us no more. You know, weโre burying our children. And itโs hard.โ
โI am all cried out. I got these glasses on but Iโm trying to hide all this puffiness and stuff with these eyes. All the pain, all the hurt I am exhausted behind all of this. I just want all of it to be done.โ
But it wonโt be done anytime soon. Because one of the two men accused in her daughterโs murder โ is on trial this week.
โWhen they talk about it in the courtroom. Talk about the pictures, talk about this, the video, it hurts. You know, it just hurts.โ
But Leggett says despite the pain โ sheโs going to see it through โ until she gets justice for Shykereya.
โShe was my best friend. I mean, we shared a lot.โ
Juantonio Cosby of Selma is on trial in the case โ facing murder and assault charges.
Co-defendant Kenneth Ingram of Selma was sentenced to 20 years in prison โ after pleading guilty to manslaughter and assault last year.
