A Selma architect is playing a major role in helping to preserve some of the rich history found in west Alabama.

Architect Richard Hudgens has a hand in several projects underway in west Alabama — to stabilize and restore several historic building in the area.

“The house was in really, really bad condition with collapsed walls and roof collapsed partially,” said Hudgens.

Now the historic house has been stabilized — and has a new roof.

Wal Preservinghistory1101 Fox Pkg1“That was important. And so we’re dry and we’ve got new decking on top of the old decking. We’ve got good quality shingle on it. And one of the the key things was rebuilding this porch. When they took the porch off years ago that allowed the water to rot that front wall. That’s why that front wall was caving in.”

Hudgens says it may take three grants to completely finish all the work needed at the Boynton House. He say the next step in the process — is to secure a second grant to fund the next phase of the project.

“And so we’re hoping that will get the outside redone and get a lot of the inside done,” said Hudgens.

The National Park Service awarded the historically Black university two grants — to renovate and upgrade Dinkins and Pollard Halls.

“All of those funds are going to be used to preserve those buildings. And hope to carry them into the next 100 years,” said Angion.

“I specialize in historical restoration. We’re also working on Lincoln School gym in Marion — which is founded by freed slaves in 1867. And it’s the forerunner of Alabama State University. So, that’s dear to my heart,” said Hudgens.
