CBS NEWS POLL: If Trump wins, more voters foresee better finances, staying out of war
CAMPAIGN 2024: A new CBS News poll shows more voters think they’d be better off financially if Donald Trump wins the presidential race, and more voters think Trump can keep the U.S. out of a war.
The CBS News poll shows that people who feel as though they are worse off financially because of inflation and interest races are not only turning away from President Biden, but they overwhelmingly think that they’d be better off under Trump.
When asked which president’s policies would help them become better off financially if he wins, 45% said Trump compared to 18% who said Biden. 48% said they’d be worse off under Biden’s policies compared to 32% who said Trump. 34% said they expect their finances to be about the same with a Biden victory, compared to 23% who said they’d be about the same with a Trump win.
When asked about whether Biden’s or Trump’s policies would keep the U.S. out of war, the poll showed 49% believed Biden would increase the chances for the U.S. to be involved in war, with 39% saying Trump. 23% thought Biden would decrease the chances of being in a war, compared to 43% saying it’s Trump that would keep America out of war. 28% said a Biden victory would have no effect, compared to 18% who said there would be no effect under Trump.
Overall, 73% say things are going badly in the U.S. That number was 65% in January.
When asked who is their choice for president, 51% said Trump, while 48% said Biden.
74% of likely Biden voters say a rematch with Trump makes them nervous. 64% of likely Trump voters say a rematch makes them hopeful.
The CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 2,636 U.S. adult residents interviewed between October 30th-November 3rd, 2023. The sample was weighted according to gender, age, race, and education based on the U.S. Census American Community Survey and Current Population Survey, as well as past vote. The margin of error is ±2.6 points.
