Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed, City Council members sworn in for new term

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed and all nine members of the Montgomery City Council have been sworn into office.

The ceremony was held Wednesday morning at the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre. It was followed by a Citizens Welcome Reception and an Inauguration Gala.

Reed is starting his second four-year term in office after becoming Montgomery’s first-ever Black mayor in 2019. His inauguration theme was “Keeping Montgomery Moving Forward.”

The city council swearing-in included three new members. Julie Turner Beard is the new council member for District 2, Franetta Riley joins council in District 4 and Andrew Szymanski will now represent District 7.

Council members chose C.C. Calhoun to be council president, the first Black council member to take that role. Glen Pruitt will be president pro tem.
