A series of incidents in Montgomery overnight included the shooting of a police officer.

Maj. Saba Coleman of the Montgomery Police Department told Action 8 News that it all started around 12:20 this morning. Police were called to the area of South Panama Street near Poplar Street to the report of a person shooting a gun. Coleman says officers found the suspect, a male, in the area of Poplar Street and Ann Street.

Coleman says the suspect fired at an officer, and the officer fired back.

After that, Coleman says the suspect shot a man during a robbery attempt. She says as more police arrived, the suspect fired on them. That’s when one officer was hit and suffered what she described as a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Police then ran after the suspect, who went into a business in the 1100 block of Ann Street, which is just north of the Interstate 85/Ann Street exit. Coleman says the man barricaded himself inside. She says officers took control of the scene and took the suspect into custody. She says the suspect had a non-life threatening gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital. Charges are pending against him.

The injured officer and the man who was shot in the robbery attempt were also taken to a hospital. Both are expected to recover.

Coleman says the case has been turned over to the State Bureau of Investigation. The suspect’s name has not been released.
