ACTION 8 UPDATE: Name released of Montgomery police officer shot
ACTION 8 UPDATE: We have new information on the robbery and standoff that left a Montgomery police officer recovering from being shot.
We now know the officer involved is 25-year-old Jonathan Cooper. He’s a four year veteran assigned to patrol.
As Action 8 News has reported, it all started just after midnight Saturday, when police were called to the area of South Panama Street near Poplar Street to the report of a person shooting a gun.
Police say a short time later, the suspect shot a man during a robbery attempt, then fired on officers, which is when Officer Cooper was hit.
Police say the suspect barricaded himself inside a business in the 1100 block of Ann Street before being taken into custody.
Montgomery Police Chief Darryl Albert spoke publicly today, saying he is dedicated to keeping the city safe.
“These officers come to work everyday and put their lives on the line, but we won’t tolerate that type of behavior. We will be steadfast in defending this community, steadfast in defending each other and we won’t allow that to happen. Again, we aren’t going to turn around and go home. We will fight to the end,” Albert said.
Police say the man who was shot during the robbery attempt has been released from the hospital.
The suspect has just been identified as 23-year-old Davonta Fuller of Montgomery. He was treated at a local hospital and is now in jail.
Fuller is charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of robbery. He is being held without bond.
