A fire investigation is underway in Camden — following a fire Thursday morning — at J.E. Hobbs Elementary School.

Wal Jehobbsfire0111 VoFire Chief Warren Bailey says fire and smoke damaged two offices at the school. He says fire fighters were able to put out the fire in minutes after a quick response — and prevent it spreading.

“One major office there is trashed. It’s pretty much damaged. We had fire that got up into the attic in there. And uh, fire all around in that one room and just smoke damage in the room next to that one so, we just very fortunate to get here and stop it before it got into the gym,” said Bailey.

Wal Jehobbsfire0111 Vo 1It’s the third time in the past two years that a building has caught fire on the Hobbs campus.

“Governor Ivey, I don’t know if you’re watching but it would just be wonderful if we could just get a brand new Kay Ivey Elementary School in your hometown of Wilcox County, right here on this campus,” said principal Vernita Laister.

Governor Kay Ivey is a native of Camden.

The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
