Free doorbell cameras available to some residents in Montgomery’s City Council District 6

Residents who live in Montgomery’s City Council District 6 can now apply for a free doorbell camera. This program started about two weeks ago, and it’s a way to help people feel safer in their neighborhoods. The cameras connect to the STAR Watch program with the Montgomery Police Department, and they are free to residents who have Wi-Fi in their homes. Twelve doorbell cameras have been given out so far, and City Councilman Oronde Mitchell says he hopes to be able to put 3 to 4 cameras in each of the 15 neighborhoods in District 6. The doorbell cameras are funded through a partnership with the West Alabama Jubilee Community Association.

Mitchell says he is choosing the homes where cameras will be installed – with the help of the neighborhood associations – to ensure they are placed in strategic spots to combat crime.  The reason that these cameras will be connected to STAR Watch at the Montgomery Police Department is because it is an another way that law enforcement can place additional sets of eyes – so to speak – in the community to help fight criminal behavior. If you live in District 6 and would like to apply for a camera, you can contact City Councilman Oronde Mitchell at 334- 221-5975 or omitchell@montgomeryal.gov.
