Tornado hit near downtown Wetumpka five years ago

Friday marks the fifth anniversary of the EF-2 tornado that hit near downtown Wetumpka.

The tornado struck on January 19, 2019. It damaged or destroyed around 150 buildings, but thankfully, no one was killed.

Some of the worst damage was just across the bridge from downtown Wetumpka, at First Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church and at the police department building.

The churches have been rebuilt. Other buildings are gone.

The police department ended up moving to a vacant bank building on U.S. Highway 231.
