Downtown Montgomery joins Main Street Alabama
Downtown Montgomery has been designated as the state’s newest Main Street Alabama community. So, what does this mean? This is part of an ongoing effort to revitalize Montgomery’s downtown area. Our city is now the 33rd community in Alabama to implement Main Street’s strategy. It has been hugely successful in smaller towns like Wetumpka and Monroeville in bringing back stores and restaurants.
The revitalization effort will focus on areas in and around Bibb street, Perry Street, Commerce Street, and Coosa Street. The goal of the Main Street initiative is to connect more people to available assets, so that they can establish businesses in the downtown area. Mayor Steven Reed, city and county officials, and members of the Chamber of Commerce came together to celebrate this distinction. Local leaders say they hope this program will help attract new businesses, entrepreneurs, and investors to our downtown area, as well as create job opportunities and stimulate economic growth.
“The main process that we work with is to help existing businesses make more money And to help citizens feel excited about their district again that’s really the bottom line for us that’s what we want, ” says Mary Wirth who is the President of Main Street. Keiauna White owns a clothing boutique downtown and is President of the Downtown Business Association. “I am excited about this community. There’s no other place that I would rather operate my business, and I look forward to all of us working together to build the culture that we want to experience, ” White says.
The Main Street program’s motto is creating jobs and keeping character, and it’s really about connecting with other communities too. Now, the City of Montgomery will have access to a comprehensive network of resources, expertise, and support from across the state.
