Grey Wolf helicopter training unit activated at Maxwell Air Force Base

The new Grey Wolf helicopter training unit has now been officially activated at Maxwell Air Force Base.

A ceremony was held today as leadership for the new Detachment 3 of the 58th Operations Group was given to its new commander, Lt. Col. Frank “Derek” Cumbie.

In 2020, Maxwell Air Force Base was selected for the MH-139 Grey Wolf helicopter training.  The 908th Airlift Wing was chosen to help train personnel.

“Our unit is going to bring full-time active duty members to the base here and over the next 10 years we’re going to have hundreds of pilots and enlisted aviators come through here for training,” Cumbie told Action 8 News. “The training lasts four to six months, so they are going to be here for a significant amount of time, and during that time they’re going to engage in the community and be a part of it.”

Detachment 3 will be training right alongside the 908th.
