Montgomery Public Schools, state lawmaker address helping students with conflict resolution
Montgomery Public Schools and State Rep. Phillip Ensler (D-District 74) have announced a pilot conflict resolution program at Percy Julian High School.
School Superintendent Melvin Brown says the new program will allow the school to help its students learn new and different methods to help resolve conflicts in a positive way.
The pilot program will feature communication skill workshops, peer support groups and classroom integration to discuss ways to apply lessons at school and at home.
Ensler was once a teacher at the school.
“Here at Percy Julian, there is an amazing faculty. Principal Lee is great. So to have it start here, and the hope again is to expand it to all of our schools eventually. That takes funding. But we are going to show that it’s working here and then hope that we can have it in other schools,” Ensler said.
“We want to be proactive about conflict resolution, and just helping students to have just small nuggets, just different tips or even go as intensive as restorative circles, and just different things of options of being able to provide access for our students,” Percy Julian High School principal Ibrahim Lee said.
The plan also includes getting parents involved in their child’s academic day in order to connect students, parents and faculty.
