Work underway to transform West Fairview Avenue in Montgomery
A $9 million construction project has been launched to transform West Fairview Avenue to improve the quality of life in that part of Montgomery. The announcement was made at a news conference yesterday.
The project extends from the West Fairview Avenue intersection with South Court Street westward to Interstate 65.
Drainage will be improved, sidewalks will be built on both sides of the roadway and traffic lights will be replaced. In addition, the number of lanes will be reduced from four to three. That will slow the flow of traffic and make it easier to reach stores, restaurants and other businesses, according to Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed.
“We’re also adding landscaping. We want to beautify the area,” Cedric Campbell, the regional vice president of Goodwyn Mills Cawood, said. The company helped plan the project.
“Reducing those lane widths, as the mayor talked about, will definitely not only calm the traffic patterns a little bit, we also hope that it improves it. We’re putting dedicated left turn lanes which we don’t have at this time,” he said.
The project is a key part of the city’s broader revitalization efforts in West Montgomery. Those efforts include construction of a new $14 million fire station, the development of the Freedom Village housing complex and renovations to the Fairview Farmers Market.
The work on West Fairview Avenue is expected to take 18 months.
