Shelter Dogs in Danger of Canine Parvovirus
The Greenville Animal Shelter is currently refusing animals due to a sudden case of Parvo. According to the American veterinary medicine association Canine parvovirus or CPV is highly contagious and is spread from dog to dog by both direct or indirect contact with their feces and could be fatal.
Vaccines can prevent this infection if received early but the mortality rate for puppies is more than 90% when untreated. All dogs are in danger of parvovirus but puppies between 6 and 20 weeks of age are especially in danger of infection.
The infection shows itself with symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting and lethargic behavior. Any animals affected should be separated to stop the spread of disease.
