Selma mother says Selma High School teacher slapped her son

From the West Alabama Newsroom–

A Selma woman takes to social media — to seek justice a son she says was physically assaulted by one of his teachers at Selma High School.

Gabriel Brown is furious. Because she says her son was back-hand slapped by a Selma High School teacher. And she says there’s video of the incident to prove it.

“Yes it is. I was able to view it. One of the administrators from Selma High School allowed me to view that footage,” said Brown.

Wal Teacherslap0221 Fox PkgSelma City School Superintendent Dr. Zickeyous Byrd confirmed that the district is aware of the incident. And says that the matter is under investigation.

“Unfortunately, I’m not able to speak on current investigation matters. But we are aware of that situation. Of course, we are taking that very seriously,” Byrd said.

Brown says teachers putting their hands on a student is totally unacceptable. So, she began posting about the incident on social media — because she didn’t want the incident swept under a rug.

“After speaking to administrators, people at central office, nothing had been done. I want to bring awareness to what happened to my son,” said Brown

Brown says she’s also filed assault charges against the teacher. And a warrant was issued — and executed by police.

“We are also taking that into account as well, and we are monitoring that situation as it actually moves through the court system,” said Byrd.

“But of course as a school district, we have our own investigation. And again the matter is still under investigation.”

City court officials say a court date for a judge to hear the case has not yet been set.

The city court judge recused himself from the case. So now the court is waiting for a another judge to be appointed to hear the case.
