ACTION 8 UPDATE: Son of Montgomery judge now charged with attempted murder
Khalfani Hardwick has now made a court appearance on charges that his stabbed and shot his father, Montgomery County Circuit Judge Johnny Hardwick.
Khalfani Hardwick appeared in Montgomery County Court this afternoon before retired Autauga County Circuit Judge Ben Fuller. Khalfani Hardwick has now been charged with attempted murder, in addition to the previous charges of domestic violence and illegally having a gun.
Investigators say he stabbed Judge Hardwick several times in the neck and face on Saturday before shooting him in the face at their home. Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies say they later found Khalfani Hardwick on U.S. Highway 231 where he was taken into custody.
He remains in the Montgomery County Jail. The domestic violence charge qualifies for Aniah’s Law, which means he is not entitled to having a bail amount set until an Aniah’s Law hearing is held.
“Because this defendant is obviously dangerous and has shown his propensity to commit violent crimes, we’re going to make sure keep him locked up as long as we can,” Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey told Action 8 News.
Action 8 News found court records that show in March 2014, Khalfani Hardwick was charged with attempted murder after police say he shot a man in the back of the head during an altercation on Carmichael Road. Documents show he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of assault in the second degree in 2017.
Judge Hardwick was taken to a hospital on Saturday with injuries that were described as serious. There have been no updates on his condition.
