8 ON YOUR SIDE CONSUMER ALERT: GM has now expanded a recall of Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks which have tailgates that can open unexpectedly.

The recall now involves 820,000 trucks. Last month, it was about 300,000 when the recall was first announced.

The problem is with the tailgate’s electronic release, which can short circuit after getting wet.

Here are the models being recalled:

2020-2023 Chevrolet Silverado
2020-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500
2020-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 3500
2020-2023 GMC Sierra
2020-2024 GMC Sierra 2500
2020-2024 GMC Sierra 3500

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the tailgate can unlock when the truck is in park. Then, when the truck is moving, it could raise the chance of a crash and problems with cargo that isn’t secured.

ABC News reports that GM has received 136 complaints, with a customer reporting a minor injury and three reports of minor property damage.

Owners are advised to check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving. Dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies for free.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 18. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782.
