Concerned parents of students in the Selma City School District — reach out to Action 8 News — over conditions at two schools.

A plumbing issue at Selma High School — and mold at Meadowview Elementary — have parents concerned — about the safety of their children.

Wal Schoolconcerns Pkg2 Superintendent Dr. Zickeyous Byrd says a small portion of Selma High School was closed off this week after a plumbing back up in that area of the building.

“Unfortunately we had some items that were placed down our drains that actually caused a back up,” Byrd said.

“As soon as we found out that we had that problem, we contacted the plumbers, they came out and they resolved the problem quickly.”

Crews cleaned and disinfected the impacted area. And the air-flow issues are being addressed — to deal with the lingering smell.

“Nobody has to be concerned about breathing in any kind of hazardous fumes,” said Byrd.

“All students and staff, they have been relocated to a different side of the building. Again, the plumbing issue has been addressed. And so everything should be back to normal within, by the end of the day.”

Wal Schoolconcerns PkgMold and mildew are the source of the concerns at Meadowview Elementary School.

Crews inspected the entire school after mold was found in one of the classrooms.

“The mold was contained to that one area. They remediated. We’re waiting the air purification test to confirm that everything is clear.”

Byrd says students and staff won’t move back into the classroom until the district is given the all-clear.

“Of course the safety and security of our students and employees is the utmost importance to Selma City Schools. We heard about the issue. And we addressed it immediately.”
