Marion woman on the cusp of making history in Perry Co.
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
March is woman’s history month. And a woman in Marion is on the verge of a historic first in Perry County.
Barbara Howze is on the cusp of making history.
“I just want to get out there and work, and serve the people. And get some stuff done that needs to be done.”
She won the Democratic nomination to represent District 4 on the Perry County Commission during the primary election earlier this month.
“I’m not a politician. I’m a servant.”
And Howze will serve as the first woman elected to the commission — when she takes her seat on the commission come November.
“Record bears out that one was appointed to carry out her husband’s term, Ms. Irma Tucker, back in the 60s,” said Commission Chairman Robert Turner, Jr.
“Ms. Howze will be the first elected female to the Perry Co. Commission. And the first African-american female to serve on the commission.”
“I actually didn’t really think about it while I we, during the campaign,” said Howze.
“But after I won, man I’ll tell you, it was a good feeling.”
Howze is unopposed in the general election. So for all intents and purposes — she’s already won her seat on the commission.
“I’ll be there, woman at the table. You know I felt like the commission need a woman’s touch,” she said.
Howze says she plans to focus on improving roads and infrastructure in the county — during her first term in office.
