Beloved Montgomery woman celebrates 105th birthday

Mrs. Bertha Barber of Montgomery turned one hundred and five years old today. Family members, friends and local leaders gathered to celebrate her today, and District Attorney Darryl Bailey made her an honorary district attorney. She was also given a proclamation by Governor Kay Ivey, and many city and county leaders. Mrs. Barber was born in 1919 in Helicon, Alabama in Crenshaw county, and she moved to Montgomery in the 1940’s with her husband, the late R.C. Barber. Mrs. Barber worked for several colonels at Maxwell Air Force Base, and also worked at Foshee Lumber Company. She has been an active member of Mt. Gillard Missionary Baptist Church since the 1940’s, and she participates multiple times a day with the prayer line. She also attends Bible study and Sunday school.

Her granddaughter Shetonjella Barber says, “She is always the center of attention. They want to ask her can you please tell me what is the secret to long life and longevity. What she tells them is to treat others right, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. She also can tell us a lot about what she’s seen, what she’s done, what she’s been through, and what we have today that she did not have when she was born and raised. The stories that she shares are just history in itself.” Family members say she never misses the opportunity to pray with and for those around her.
